The HSE is being asked to explain why it spent €127,000 on a new bike shed for a Kerry hospital.

Managers at University Hospital Kerry were reportedly presented with plans costing between €6,000 and €9,000 for the 40-space shelter for staff bikes.

It comes less than two years after a similar project at Leinster House was revealed to have cost over €330,000.

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty called out the Government for defending the move.

"If this was satire, it would be unbelievable," he told the Dáil, "we have [healthcare] staff that are being burned out, that are leaving the system and now on top of all of that you impose a recruitment embargo on parts of the [health] system".

However, his colleague in Kerry, Pa Daly, has actually defended the bike shed.

"The shed came about because staff had requested it and it was felt that it was necessary to attract people into University Hospital Kerry", he told SPIN, "Since then there had been 2,000 users over the last 90 days".

Health service bosses are being called before the Public Accounts Committee to explain the final cost.
