Emilia Clarke has opened up about her life threatening illness.

She revealed all in an interview with The New Yorker this week.

The actress admits the first aneurysm happened during a work out shortly after the first season of Game of Thrones.

'I immediately felt as though an elastic band were squeezing my brain,' she told The New Yorker.

Emilia was diagnosed with SAH

Clarke was sent for an MRI and was quickly diagnosed with 'Subarachnoid Haemorrhage.'

She described it as, 'a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain.'

Unfortunately about a third of SAH patients die immediately or soon thereafter.

At just 24 years old, Emilia had to have brain surgery.

Following the operation, she was told she had to make it to the two week mark with, 'minimal complications.'

If she did this, then her chances of recovery were high.

Things took a turn for the worst

Shortly after the two week period a nurse woke Emilia up and asked her a few questions.

However, she wasn't able to remember her name.

On this she said, 'I am an actor; I need to remember my lines.'

Clarke was sent back to I.C.U where she thankfully managed to pull through.

Despite the good news, she couldn't help but feel remorse for those who didn't make it out of the hospital.

'I was continually reminded of just how fortunate I was.'

Emilia was later told she had a smaller aneurysm on the other side of her brain that could 'pop' at any time.

However, it was possible it would remain dormant.

Game of Thrones

Soon after this she was thrown into a press tour for Game of Thrones.

The actress said she would sip on morphine in between interviews.

'The pain was there, and the fatigue was like the worst exhaustion I’d ever experienced, multiplied by a million.'

When season two of Game of Thrones came around, she gave it her all despite the exhaustion.

'If I am truly being honest, every minute of every day I thought I was going to die.'

Broadway

After the third season of GOT, Clarke took on a role in Broadway.

During that time she went for a brain scan only to discover, 'the growth on the other side of [her] brain had doubled in size.'

It was time to have another operation.

She woke in agony following a failed procedure.

'I was screaming in pain. The procedure had failed.'

Doctors had to operate again and fortunately, the surgery went well.

'I was sure that the news of my illness would get out. And it did—for a fleeting moment.'

'The National Enquirer ran a short story. A reporter asked me about it and I denied it.'

'But now, after keeping quiet all these years, I’m telling you the truth in full.'

The whole experience inspired Emilia to dedicate time to a stroke and brain injury charity called SameYou.

Emilia's father played a big role in her recovery. Unfortunately he died of cancer in 2016.

She couldn't wrap up her story without acknowledging him.

'Every day, I miss my father... I can never thank him enough for holding my hand to the very end.'
