A jury in the US has found Meta and Google liable for social media addiction in a landmark case.
A 20 year-old woman, who brought the case, says her early use of social media made her addicted and her depression worse.
The jury found that Instagram, which is owned by Meta, and YouTube, which is owned by Google, were responsible for harm caused to the anonymous plaintiff.
She was awarded $3 million in damages.
The jury also decided each company's negligence was a substantial factor in causing harm to the plaintiff.
Snapchat and TikTok were also defendants in the trial - but both settled with the plaintiff before it began.
