An annual rent increase of over 20 per cent has been revealed in counties such as Cavan and Roscommon.

Residential Tenancies Board figures for Q1 of this year, reveal areas outside of Dublin are being hit the hardest.

The average annual rent in rural Ireland has increased by 9.5 per cent.

Housing charity Threshold is urging the government to consider renters in the upcoming budget.

Threshold’s Policy Officer, Ann-Marie O’Reilly believes the government could offer short-term solutions:

"We'd like to see some sort of rent relief for renters, similar to what we had up until 2010. There's also some discussion about the need to have tax measures to keep landlords in the sector. We want to see that accompanied by increased security of tenure for tenants. Another option is to extend the rent pressure zones to the entire country".

Ann-Marie O'Reilly also says the rise in rural rents is an alarming trend:

"Some people have been able to take the opportunity to move away from the cities, possibly back to where they're from. Especially those who can work from home. It's resulted in increased rents in those areas, and that's a combination of higher demand and a lack of supply. Unfortunately, that then has an impact on the local market generally".

"It's become quite a dire situation for many renters out there".

The RTB’s latest report details another chapter in the struggles of those living in– or searching for private rented accommodation in Ireland.

The RTB cited an annual increase in rents of 9.2% in new tenancies in Q1 2022 alone.

This now makes the national standardised average rent in new tenancies at €1,460 in Q1 2022, showing an increase of €123 compared to the previous year. That is an additional €1,476 a year.
