The clothing outlet wrote, 'With the health and welfare of our employees and customers front of mind, we have made the decision to close our stores in the Republic of Ireland, until further notice.'

'Penneys has overcome many challenges over the past 50 years, and we pride ourselves on our agility and our ability to adapt.'

'We thank all our employees, customers, suppliers and partners for their continued support.'

Penneys aren't the only clothing giant shutting their doors - Brown Thomas and Arnotts are also closed.

Both stores announced the news last night, 'Following the advice from the Government and the HSE we have taken the decision to close our physical stores from 5pm this evening, Wednesday March 18th.'

However, it's not all doom and gloom, Brown Thomas customers can still shop online here while Arnotts customer can shop here.
