What's next for the Normal People characters?

The stars of Normal People, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, joined Deadline for a chat this week.

They spoke about what they believe is next for their characters Connell and Marianne.

And Paul's answer will break your heart a little bit.

The director and executive producer of Normal People, Lenny Abrahamson, joined the interview as well.

On the topic of a potential second season, he admitted they had talked about how interesting it would be to see where the characters are now.

However, he added that apart from, 'just general musings and over a drink,' there have been, 'no concrete discussions.'

Lenny shared that the book's author Sally Rooney ended Connell and Marianne's story the way she did, 'because it feels right.'

Despite this, the director is hopeful they'll revisit the story in five years time to, 'find out what happened.'

'Is somebody a father or a mother? What relationships are they in that then get disrupted by their meeting again?'

Daisy and Paul's opinion

Daisy was asked what she imagines might happen to the characters.

She responded, 'I don’t know. A little bit of me imagines that they’ll always be in each other’s lives.'

'I just don’t know if it would be in the romantic sense, but at the same time, I find that quite hard to believe, because they do have this uniquely special connection.'

'And so, I hope that they do end up getting married and have loads of kids.'

Paul on the other hand, believes his character Connell, 'would potentially get married to somebody else.'

He said, 'It’ll destroy lots of people’s lives along the way, because ultimately they’re going to be drawn.'

'But they will consciously resist the idea that they’re supposed to be together.'

The actor continued, 'It’ll be a long process of discovery until they finally find each other permanently, I think.'

Paul added, 'I really need them to be together.'

'If Sally ever decides to do the second book or second series, I need them to be together.'
