Met Éireann says there'll be thundery downpours and a risk of spot flooding in many parts of the country this afternoon.

The status yellow thunderstorm warning will be valid until 8pm, with Leinster, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo impacted.

Joanna Donnelly from Met Éireann advises motorists to maintain a very good stopping distance between your vehicle and the one in front.

"Well if you do encounter one of these heavy showers, you're going to encounter significantly reduced visibility. You'll really need to slow your speed right down, maybe even turn on your fog lights."

However, Joanna also says that conditions will improve next week:

"This is the last of the bad weather for a few days. We've got improving conditions starting from tomorrow. The last week of summer looks like it will be pretty good, with temperatures rising up to about 23 degrees inland. Just in time for kids going back to school."
