There has been a broad welcome to changes for the 2022 Leaving Cert, which will give students more choice.

The Department of Education has published new guidelines where the written exams will have more options in terms of the number of questions they can answer.

They will be similar to measures introduced just weeks before the 2021 exams, which was the result of a long-running campaign from students.

Briefs for practical work will also be issued four weeks earlier than normal.

Former headmaster of St Andrews College, Arthur Godsil, says the changes are a good idea:

"The more help students can get the better [...] I very much welcome this early intervention."

This will be the third year in a row that adjustments will be made to exams as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However it has started the conversation if this model of more choice should be permanent.
