The Prom

Netflix's brand new movie The Prom dropped on Friday, and it's fantastic.

SPIN's Sarina Bellissimo caught up with the cast to chat about the film.

The movie features an all star cast including Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman and more.

It's directed by Ryan Murphy - the man behind American Horror Story and The Boys In The Band.

What's the movie all about?

The Prom follows the story of New York City stage stars Dee Dee Allen (Streep) and Barry Glickman (Corden).

Their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers.

Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan is dealing with problems of her own.

The head of the PTA at her school (Kerry Washington), has banned her from attending prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa.

This comes despite the support of her high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key).

Dee Dee and Barry decide Emma's predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images.

They hit the road with Angie (Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells).

They're another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift.

Kerry Washington & Ariana DeBose

SPIN's Sarina Bellissimo caught up with Kerry Washington and Ariana DeBose this week.

They play mother and daughter Alyssa and Mrs. Greene in the movie.

Kerry said stepping into director Ryan Murphy's world was, "just pure joy."

"I will forever be grateful that this project is something that I can be a part of."

She added that the cast enjoyed every second together and really understood the importance of this movie.

Sarina asked Ariana what it's like working with Kerry, who she's admired from a young age.

The 29-year-old admitted, "it's a dream come true."

"Kerry's one of the few women of colour I really see myself in."

"Ariana is stuck with me for life," Kerry chimed in.

"Like there is no getting rid of me now, I'm like in her corner, in her wings, always there for her."

Kerry added that Ariana saved her on set.

She explained that this was her first time singing on screen.

"[Ariana] could have done what I have to do in this film blindfolded, backwards, upside down."

"So I was so grateful to have her wisdom and her friendship and her support, really."

James Corden & Jo Ellen Pellman

Sarina also caught up with James Corden and Jo Ellen Pellman who play Barry and Emma in the movie.

James admitted he was so excited to do this movie with Ryan Murphy, but also, "incredibly scared by it."

The actor said they had numerous conversations about his character Barry, and his background.

He described the director as being, "incredibly flattering and persuasive as to why he wanted me to do it."

"I still can't believe that it was something that I'm able to be part of."

"It was as much fun as I've ever had going to work."

Sarina went on to ask Jo how it felt when her name appeared in the trailer alongside Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden.

"I still get goosebumps when I watch that trailer," the young actress admitted.

She said, "Every single day on set was, no exaggeration, the best day of my life."

Sarina later asked James about his career path, and how he knew he made all the right choices.

He replied, "If something's daunting... that's a reason to do it."

"I get tremendous anxiety all the time about massive things but in truth, I'd rather regret doing something than not doing something."

"I also feel like if you fail at something... that can actually be a springboard to absolute success in your life."
