Netflix have confirmed The Crown will have a sixth and final season.

They shared the news in a tweet yesterday, delighting fans of the show.

Taking to Twitter, they said, 'News from the palace: we can confirm there will be a sixth (and final) season of @TheCrownNetflix, in addition to the previously announced five!'

The show was originally supposed to have six seasons, however, they announced last January that they would be stopping after five.

Creator Peter Morgan shared what changed his mind.

He said, 'As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.'

'To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day - it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.'

The upcoming fourth season will be Olivia Colman’s final season playing Queen Elizabeth II.

Imelda Stauntan will take over from her in seasons five and six.

'So to summarise – we’ll have one more season with Queen Olivia Colman, before she passes the crown to Imelda Staunton.'

'We’re just half way through! Lovely.'

The Crown season four is expected out sometime later this year.
