Teacher unions are highlighting the growing challenges of AI in third-level education.

The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) and the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) have said it's becoming increasingly tough for teachers to maintain academic integrity and meaningful assessment of students.

It comes ahead of a national event today on assessment and AI across colleges.

Some key and urgent requirements outlined from the unions include; involvement of relevant unions in decision-making related to AI, significant investment in professional development, clear guidelines and a regulated national approach.

Speaking ahead of the event at TUD Grangegorman campus, IFUT General Secretary Frank Jones said:

"There has been a seismic and fundamental shift in how students and academics engage with teaching, learning and assessment."

He says the challenge is now "rethinking assessment models in a way that ensures that students actually acquire the skills and knowledge that they are expected to demonstrate."

The unions say they will continue to engage with policymakers and institutions to ensure that the response to AI in education is measured and evidence-based.
