Up to 350 workers at Meta in Ireland could lose their jobs as part of global restructuring.

The company plans to cut around 8 thousand jobs globally - roughly 10 per cent of its workforce - as it increases spending on artificial intelligence projects and infrastructure.

However, the figure for Ireland represents 20 per cent of employees here.

Meta employs about 1800 people in Ireland.

The Facebook and Instagram parent company says the cuts are aimed at improving efficiency while funding major investment in AI technology.

The government insists state agencies will work those whose jobs are at risk at Meta.

The Financial Services Union says the job losses are the latest in a series of announcements from TECH and FINTECH companies.

It says we are reaching a dangerous stage where regulation is trailing implementation and decisions taken by employers to use AI across their businesses.

The FSU says it's happening without adequate training for staff and without proper oversight.
