A "road usage charge" could be implemented.

It's believed the reason is to meet an expected shortfall in revenue.

The plan could see a trip from Dublin to Maynooth costing 38 euro, while Dublin to Cork could be 163 euro.

The Irish Daily Mail reports the scheme is being considered by the State's transport infrastructure body.

It's Political Correspondent, Brian Mahon, says it's all about getting more people on public transport:

"They want to get more people off the road, from driving on the road."

Brian says there's an aim to get more people on board public transport.

This "charge per kilometre" would "try to kill two birds with one stone," he added.
