Polls are open in Galway and Dublin to elect two new TDs.

Constituents are being asked to decide replacements for Catherine Connolly and Paschal Donohoe.

Both constituencies have long ballot papers - with 17 candidates in Galway West and 14 in Dublin Central.

Prospective hopefuls will need a strong first preference vote to reach the 50 per cent of the vote needed to get over the line in a by election.

Voters are being reminded to bring ID when showing up to the polling station.

In Galway West areas like Moycullen and Salthill are leading the way with an overall turnout figure of a little over 21 per cent.

It's a similar number in Dublin Central as boxes in Cabra and Glasnevin at either side of the constituency are seeing the highest turnout.

Polls close at 10pm.
