For the first time since its establishment, the Provost of Trinity College Dublin will be a woman.

The ten year term of Dr Patrick Prendergast is up this July and the shortlist of applicants to fill the role are all women.

Linda Doyle is a Professor of Engineering and the Arts at TCD and has been a member of 60 Trinity boards and committees.

Professor Linda Hogan comes from the school of Ecumenics.

She served as the Vice Provost of the University from 2011 and 2016.

The final candidate is Jane Ohlmeyer who is a Professor of Modern History.

Prof Ohlmeyer has written over 13 books and has already secured the backing of Professor of Immunology Luke O'Neil.

The decision will be made by an election this April.

The chosen candidate will become the first woman to head an Irish University on a permanent basis.

Last year, the University of Limerick appointed Prof Kirsten May as interim president.
