The weather gods are not on our side.

Met Éireann is forecasting frost and wintry showers later this week in a sudden temperature change.

Most of the country enjoyed a fine weekend of sunny spells with highs of 18 and 19 degrees.

However, those temperatures will suffer a drop as the week goes on, especially from Wednesday onwards.

Met Éireann forecaster Paul Downes expects frost to set in at night, and even showers to turn to sleet or snow.

"From Wednesday onwards, we're looking at much cooler conditions pushing in there," he said.

"In northern areas, in the afternoon there, you might only see highs of about 5 to 8 degrees."

Downes said next weekend is looking more settled but it sadly won't get up to eighteen or nineteen temperature-wise.

"It's still going to be quite pleasant but at the same time, in those northerly winds it'll definitely feel a lot more seasonal."

In the meantime, Monday and Tuesday are set to be fairly mild keeping in line with higher temperatures.

On Monday there'll be highs of 13 to 17 degrees, with highs of 10 to 15 on Tuesday.
