The Taoiseach says there will be a referendum on whether or not to give Irish citizens abroad a vote in presidential elections.

Enda Kenny made the announcement at a Memorial to Irish famine victims in Philadelphia.

It's unknown what criteria would apply, but it will mean extending the right to vote to hundreds of thousands of Irish abroad.

The Constitutional Convention recommended that all Irish citizens, should have the right to vote in presidential elections four years ago.

Early last year the Government confirmed it would start looking into it.
