Google Searches For 'Shop-Local-Ireland' Jump By 540%

Since the introduction of Level 5 restrictions there has been a surge in people searching to buy Irish products.

Google searches for 'shop-local-Ireland' have increased by 540% in the past week.

The use of the words “just buy Irish” peaked with an increase of a massive 3,495 % in the last seven days.

While people searching for the term 'buy-irish-gifts' jumped by 200%.

Jeweller Hugh Statham in Nass Co Kildare says there have been challenges to this new way of doing business but it's been a success:

"We're doing a click and collect service so our clients are joining us on Instagram and Facebook, we then gift wrap it and it's ready to collect."

The words shop local increased in County Cork by 700% and by 470% in Dublin.

Shoppers Have Mixed Opinions On Buying Irish

One shopper in Dublin today said she tries to support local businesses.

However, others were less enthusiastic.

"I don't see the point," one said.

"It's a world economy or a European economy so I don't see the point anymore."

Businesses are being advised to create an online presence in the lead up to Christmas.
