Normal People

Having quickly become one of the most talked about shows of the moment, Normal People has stolen our hearts.

The complicated love story between Connell and Marianne captured us and left us wanting more.

If you just can't get enough, check out these behind-the-scenes fun facts that will make you love the show even more.

1. Paul Mescal told a white lie to get the role

Most of us have told a little white lie on our CV or during an interview and Paul Mescal is no different.

Paul didn't have a driver's license when he first applied for the role of Connell, something his agents were not going to let get in his way.

He told Entertainment Weekly: "My agent was like, 'We are not losing this job over you not being able to drive so I'll tell production that you can and in the meantime, you go off and rattle through as many lessons as you can.'"

2. Before filming began Daisy Edgar-Jones left Paul on read

Ouch!

Speaking to British Vogue, Paul revealed he was snubbed by Daisy when he text her to say he was happy they would be working together.

A reply finally arrived two days later, with Daisy claiming she never saw the text. Paul maintains he saw the blue tick appear.

3. A fart noise broke the ice during the first sex scene

At the beginning of filming what Paul refers to as "intimate scenes," the ice was broken very quickly.

Both actors were wearing 'fake sweat' (who knew?) and when moving positions rubbed off each other creating a hilarious fart noise.

Daisy told BBC Three: "Like a massive fart... The crew thought one of us had actually farted, and they were all being really polite."

4. Paul is a massive fan of the book

Paul read Normal People in just two days, picking it up at side-stage while performing in the Abbey Theatre.

The actor told Entertainment Weekly that he kept it close by at all times during filming as a reference point and re-read it many times.

He also said when it came to finally meeting Sally Rooney he was totally in awe and lost his cool.

"Any time I meet her now, it's still the same."

5. The pandemic did have some affect on production

Luckily, filming was complete before restrictions were put in place.

However, director Lenny Abrahamson said some edits still had to be finalised and he had to rely on Zoom.

Abrahamson told Hot Press that completing post-production has helped him get through isolation.

6. One of Paul's favourite moments was shooting in Italy

We're not too surprised by this one.

The last scenes to be filmed for the show were those in the beautiful mansion in the Italian countryside.

Speaking to The Version, Paul said this was one of his favourite moments as there was an amazing atmosphere between all of the actors and crew as they completed something they loved.

7. Connell and Peggy are real life roommates

Connell and Peggy were not the best of pals in Normal People.

However, it seems off-screen the Irish actors get on great!

India Mullen, who plays Peggy, is actually Paul's roommate in an apartment they share in London.

8. Paul and Daisy felt the same frustrations with their characters that we all did

We all wanted to scream at our screens at various points in the show and tell Connell and Marianne to cop on.

And it turns out Paul and Daisy felt the exact same!

Daisy told The Version that they were both frustrated with the communication barriers between both of their characters and they wished they would just talk to each other.

9. Paul and Daisy thought their counterpart was perfectly cast

Paul Mescal actually read with a number of Marianne's before Daisy Edgar-Jones.

However, he said the when Daisy arrived for a casting read he thought she was exactly how he pictured Marianne.

Daisy shared a similar sentiment, sharing that the first time she saw Paul she knew straight away that he was playing Connell.

10. Connell's chain is safe and sound with Daisy

One of the most talked about things of the series was Connell's silver chain.

Paul recently revealed to Variety that he gifted the chain to Daisy at the end of filming.

Daisy has since taken to Instagram Stories to, 'report Connell's chain is safe and sound along with Marianne's ring.'

She joked, 'I light this candle by it for an hour each day. It smells like Sandlewood and GAA shorts.'

The chain even has its own emoji and Instagram account!
