Hilary Duff on her home birth

Hilary Duff recently welcomed her third child into the world; a baby girl named Mae.

In a recent interview, she said she wanted her 9-year-old son Luca in the room for her home birth.

She explained why during a chat on the Informed Pregnancy podcast.

Hilary said her water broke around midnight, but her contractions didn't start until the following afternoon.

However, once they had started, the birth, "happened so fast."

"Luca made it right as I was pulling the baby out and Banks [Hilary's 2-year-old daughter] came in right after that."

Hilary said she made sure to prepare her son beforehand.

She explained why it was important for her to have him there, "I'm really big on being open and honest with him about how strong women are and what childbirth looks."

The actress continued, "He knows all about periods..."

"It's important for me to normalise that conversation with him for all the women who are going to be in his life."

"I think that sometimes a 9-year-old boy is like, 'Well, men have bigger muscles,' and, yeah, but we bring life into this world."

"We move a baby through our body," she went on.

Hilary said she also wants her son to be respectful of his future partner, and how they plan their child birth.

"If that's at home, that can be at home. If that's in a hospital, it will be at a hospital. There's many different ways."

Hilary shares Luca with her ex-husband Mike Comrie.

While she shares Mae and Banks with her husband Matthew Koma, who was also present for the home birth.
