Over 540 Jobs At Risk As Nestlé Wyeth Proposes To Close Askeaton Factory

Nestlé announced a proposal to close its Wyeth Nutrition infant formula plant in Askeaton.

It comes with the potential loss of 542 jobs.

In an announcement this afternoon, the Swiss group said it would cease operations at the plant in the first quarter of 2026.

A research and development unit located alongside the manufacturing plant will shut down a year before that.

A total of 491 people work in the factory with 51 employed at the Research & Development facility.

Limerick TD and Junior Minister, Niall Collins, says it's shocking news for the area:

"It'll be a huge blow to the region, both to Limerick and the Mid-West," the Minister said.

"We're absolutely shocked," he concluded.

Union Response

Meanwhile, SIPTU's called for an urgent meeting with management following the announcement.

The union said it's horrendous for workers and their families and has come as a complete shock.

Minister for Employment Simon Coveney its hugely disappointing news and officials will now begin a process of engagement with the management and workers in the company.

He says the full range of state supports will be made available to the employees,
