A councillor says drink spiking cases have been normalised and aren't being taken seriously.

Fianna Fail's Audrey Buckley says a family member was possibly spiked two months ago and left in hospital for hours before being seen.

The Programme For Government commits to introducing stronger laws to combat spiking around the country.

The union of students in Ireland is reminding young people it's never funny to spike someone's drink.

AMLÉ's Faye Ní Dhomhnaill told SPIN, "I've been victim to it in the past where, someone will but something in my drink and its not because they want to do anything inappropriate with me. It's because  they want me to make a fool of myself".

She continued, "We see with the growth of 'incel' culture, a lot of it online is about humiliating women as well".

Faye says colleges are also doing their part to protect people from spiking.

"I know many SU's around country would provide, it looks like a scrunchie on your wrist, but you can put it on top of your drink so it just has room for a straw to put in," she said.

Student Union's have also been providing drug testing kits to students too.
