A man in his 20s is being questioned about the alleged sexual assault of a young child in Saggart in Dublin.

TUSLA says the 10 year old girl had been in its care but had escaped during an outing in the city.

The child and family agency has confirmed the young girl had been in its care since February of this year - and lived in a fully staffed, registered residential placement.

The child subsequently told staff she'd been involved in a serious incident and TUSLA says its priority now is supporting the young girl and her family and liaising with Gardaí as they investigate what happened.

The alleged incident took place at the entrance to the Citywest Hotel which is housing international protection applicants.

Its understood neither the girl or the man at the centre of the incident were staying at the hotel.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were at City West Drive, Garter Lane or the nearby Saggart and Citywest Luas stops between 11pm on Sunday and 1:30am on Monday to come forward.
