Three in five people under 25 are thinking about emigrating.

Research from the National Youth Council shows the rising cost of living is a major issue for young people.

More than 80% of 18 to 24-year-olds feel it's negatively affecting their lives, particularly when it comes to rent and accommodation.

The RED C/NYCI research shows that for 94% of respondents, rent and accommodation are a major financial burden.

Education fees, daily essentials and healthcare are among the other financial burdens.

70% of the public thinks younger people are disproportionately affected by rising costs.

Kathryn Walsh of the NYCI said, “Young people are facing financial pressures across the board.

"We must stop penalising them for their age.

"Equalising welfare rates and abolishing sub-minimum wages are not just economic measures - they are statements of fairness.”

Labour Housing Spokesperson Conor Sheehan told SPIN that he's considered leaving Ireland in the past.

"But I would advise people to keep an open mind towards staying in this country," the TD said, "We need young people for the future, we need our skilled workers.

"This is why I really believe we need a change in Government, away from the Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael status quo".

According to the CSO, 13,500 people left Ireland for Australia in the 12 months to April.
