Call & Response Youth Music And Arts Festival

Young people is rural towns across Clare and Limerick can look forward to watching or participating in one of a series of music and art workshop events throughout the month September 2021.

The Local Creative Youth Partnership is working with the Dreams festival in Bruff, trad musicians from the Sliabh Luachra Trail in Abbeyfeale, Music Generation Clare, theatre makers, visual artists and youth services to deliver workshops in song-writing, instrument playing, painting, make-up and theatre.

For young musicians, a wide range of genres from hip-hop to traditional and rock will mark the styles of workshop and performance programme that is designed to encourage all young people to engage whether they are at beginner or advanced levels.

Those who wish to try out youth theatre, visual art, make-up or craft will also find something of interest in this festive trail of creative events.

In the County Limerick town of Bruff Young Dreams, a weekend festival to mark Dolores O’Riordan’s 50th birthday, invites 18 to 25 year olds to submit their original material to a singer songwriter showcase while younger children will take part in music workshops to create a recording for the artist’s birthday on September 6th.

Visual art created through workshops will form an exhibition in shop windows in the town – also inspired by Dolores O’Riordan.

The West Limerick town of Abbeyfeale will come alive with young musicians associated with the Sliabh Luachra Trail.

Workshops for beginners as well as master classes for more advanced students will feature throughout the day of September 11th and a concert featuring Breaking Trad alongside some of Abbeyfeale’s young, emerging musicians takes place in the recently upgraded Glórach Theatre in Abbeyfeale.

On the same day, Abbeyfeale’s Traveller community is invited to St. Ita’s Hall to share stories and songs from their distinctive heritage in the launch of an audio recording of Traveller music and cultural heritage.

On the opposite side of the Shannon Estuary, a range of activities are open to young people in County Clare. Querrin Pier is the site for a visual art workshop while Kilkee sees a new youth theatre initiative.

For Culture Night, Music Generation Clare opens workshops for very young learners in Kilkee Community College and Clare Youth service shares an event from their ongoing make-up workshop programme.

Culture Night in County Limerick sees an exhibition of rush craft work in the windows of Foróige’s youth centre – a sharing of work completed by young people from this centre over the Summer months.

The Nicholas St. Branch of Limerick Youth Service also shares some of the work they have been undertaking through a music residency programme over Summer.

All of the events featured in Call and Response will be carried out in strict adherence with public health guidelines.

Where possible, workshops will take place in venues with outdoor locations and online facilitation being factored in where necessary.
