With the clocks going forward this weekend and after the sunshine last week, it's very easy to trick yourself into thinking summer is on the way.

But don't go putting away those winter clothes just yet, because the coldest week of the year is about to hit Ireland.

According to Met Eireann a cold and breezy day lies ahead, with rain along the coast. The showers will be fairly widespread by afternoon, many heavy, with some hail and thunder.

It will turn cold quickly after dark with frost setting in early tonight. There will be fairly widespread showers too, with some falling as sleet and snow even at low levels. Lowest temperatures will fall between +1 and -1 degrees.

Tuesday will be a cold day too with some further sleet or snow showers in the morning, but most of these will turn to rain in the afternoon.

Tuesday night is when things will be the coldest with lowest temperatures reaching 0 and -4 degrees.

Wednesday and Thursday will still feel colder, but as the weekend approaches, daytime temperatures will hit between 6 and 9 degrees at best.
