Simon Harris suggests 5km travel limit could be eased

The Higher Education Minister has suggested the 5km travel limit could be eased next month.

Level 5 restrictions have been in place since January, with the phased reopening of schools the only restrictions eased so far.

The government is due to announce next week if further measures will be eased from April 5th.

The biggest bone of contention among politicians so far has been the restriction where people can only travel 5km from their home, unless for essential reasons.

Speaking this morning, Minister Simon Harris says it could be eased.

"I do think we have to go beyond just what telling people what April looks like," he said.

"I think April will see some easing of restrictions. That 5km is driving people absolutely bonkers at this stage," he added.

"I think we have to look at how people can live with low-risk activity."

Also expected to be discussed when the Cabinet meets next week is the possible reopening of construction, as well as outdoor activities.

NPHET will meet on Monday and deliver its recommendations before Ministers consider them next Tuesday.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin is expected to address the nation later that evening.
