GP's claim that anyone on a certain period pain pill could fail a road-side drug test.

According to the , any woman who takes Feminax as well as anybody on Solpadeine would fail under the new rules which were introduced last month.

Both drugs contain codeine which is detected under the new saliva-testing facility used by the Gardai, even if people take the recommended dosage.

Irish College of General Practitioners chair of Communications Mark Murphy said told the Irish Independent: "Care must be taken to ensure people are not incorrectly deemed to be unfit to drive, particularly older members of society,"

"Our concern is over opiates and benzodiazepines which are two groups of drugs that will result in a positive test result," he added.

"About 4pc of the population are on long-term use of opiates such as Solpadeine for chronic pain and they can tolerate it and do not feel it impairs them."
