Profits at Nintendo have more than tripled as people play games more while stuck at home during the pandemic.

The Japanese company behind Pokemon made €1.6 billion in the six months to September.

It sold more than five million copies of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars game for its Switch console.

Andrei Pantille from the Video Game society in NUI Galway says the classic game is still a favourite:

"I quite enjoy Pokemon quite a lot especially when I'm stuck at home these days."

Nintendo remains one of Andrei's favourites as it "brings people together".

This view wasn't shared by those in the board game community.

Martin from Gamers World shop in Dublin says card and board games still turn up trumps when it comes to family fun.

"I think a lot parents want an excuse to get their kids off their computers," he said.

He said parents want kids to spend time with their siblings and parents sitting across a table.

"You don't get that kind of interaction with video games."

For chairman of the UCD Game Society, gaming has been a fantastic social outlet.

"Most of my friend groups I found through gaming," he said.

Jack doesn't like to describe himself as a gamer as the term as seen as "derogatory."

"When people say gamer they're like 'he spends ten hours in his room playing games ', which is an exaggeration of course."
