Doubt over whether schools will reopen from January 11th

Senior Government ministers will meet this afternoon to consider whether schools should reopen from next Monday.

Last week, the Taoiseach announced reopening would be delayed until January 11th as a result of the surge in COVID-19 cases.

However, there is further doubt with the rise in cases higher than at any stage during the pandemic.

Last night over 6,110 cases of the virus were reported, along with 6 further deaths.

The Cabinet sub-committee on COVID-19 will discuss the proposal before a final decision is made on Wednesday.

The three party leaders along with the Education, Health, Finance and Public Expenditure ministers will attend.

Senior health officials are also expected to be at the meeting.
