Medical scientists are going on strike as severe recruitment problems in the sector have been ignored.

They'll walk off the job between 8am and 8pm on March 30th, as up to 20 per cent of posts are unfilled in hospitals across the country.

They say if no progress is made a further two days of action are planned for April 5th and 7th.

Medical Laboratory Scientists Association General Secretary Terry Casey says the pay isn't good enough.

Many scientists are opting to go into research or the private sector on account of the pay and recruitment issues.

1 in 5 rolls in Irish hospitals are currently unfilled and this is is leading to overwhelm and burnout of Medical scientists who have to shoulder more work as a result of the lack of medical scientists.
