Man Being Questioned After Death Of Young Woman In Offaly

Young teacher killed in assault in Offaly

A man in his 40s remains in custody this morning in connection with the murder of a young teacher in Co. Offaly.

The 23-year-old, named locally as Ashling Murphy, was attacked in Tullamore yesterday afternoon.

The primary school teacher was attacked along the canal in Tullamore at around 4pm - and it's understood two women tried to intervene.

An area along the Grand Canal remained sealed off in the town overnight following the attack.

Ms Murphy was exercising along the canal between Boland's Lock and Digby Bridge when she was attacked.

A man in his 40s was arrested, and remains in custody at Tullamore Garda station this morning.

Gardaí believe it was a random attack and are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them.

In particular, officers are appealing to anyone who was in the Cappincur/Canal walk area of Tullamore before 4pm yesterday to contact them at Tullamore Garda Station.
