Road users are being asked to walk, cycle or take public transport today.

Motorists are encouraged to seek other modes of transport on 'World Car Free Day'.

Locations such as Guernsey and Berlin in Germany have announced free public transport to mark the occasion.

Dublin Bikes will be free to use for the day - to encourage cycling in the capital.

Professor of Sustainable Energy at UCC, Hannah Daly, says there are plenty of benefits of going car-free.

"It's true that we've built our environment around the need to own a car," Daly says.

"Weaning ourselves off that addiction or that need will be tricky."

"It's not going to be easy but it's about making streets safe for children, it's about no noise.. air pollution."

Daly added that we might never have a car-free countryside, as public transport needs to drastically improve.
