Tipperary Family Raise Funds For Cancer Support

There is a sunflower field coming to the Premier County this summer in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and Cappagh Orthopaedic Hospital.

The Laffan family of Kingstown Cashel have sown 3.5 acres of sunflowers in a roadside field in their farm.

The idea is when the flowers are in full bloom towards the end of the summer, people will have the chance to visit the field to see the beautiful sunflowers, have an opportunity to take a picture, enjoy the flowers and of course pick a couple of sunflowers to take home with them.

The Laffan family, like many other families, have gone through the experience of cancer and they wanted to do something to support the organisation’s that carry out great work in this area.

Sean Laffan tells us his motivation behind this:

"I recently had a tumour removed in my left shoulder, all under the excellent care of Prof Gary O’Toole and his team in the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh and therefore we wanted to try and give something back, both to the Irish Cancer Society to help others, and of course to Cappagh Hospital for the wonderful people I met while I was there.

I personally can’t speak highly enough about all the staff I came into contact with, while I went through my journey.

I was very lucky to have the outcome I now have and feel so blessed and was wondering how we could do something a little different to raise some funds.”

Sean’s youngest son Niall who over the winter months came up with the idea said:

"Our family have decided to raise much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh.

We look forward to welcoming individuals and families onto to our farm over the coming weeks.

It is hoped that we will have nearly 100,000 fully grown sunflowers by mid-August.

We are very happy with the level of interest in this project and fundraising effort to date and would encourage everyone to keep up to date with our progress by following our social media accounts” concluded Niall.
