The Health Minister says vaccines are on the way to help fight the virus.

The first case of monkeypox has been identified in the Republic.

It was detected by health authorities last night in the east of the country.

The person involved has not been hospitalised according to the health authorities.

A further suspected case of the mild illness is also being investigated.

It comes as the first case on the island was confirmed in the north on Thursday.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says they have invested in a vaccine programme to slow the spread.

Donnelly says the risk remains low despite growing concern.

"We have about 200 or so, a little over 200 cases reported in Europe," he said.

"Thankfully a very very small number of them have been hospitalised."
