Two Limerick Gardaí have been praised for their quick-thinking in rescuing a woman, who was trapped in her car after it entered a river.

Garda Michael Hally and Garda Andrew Maher arrived at River Deel shortly after 7pm on Saturday night.

They received reports that a car had skidded on ice and entered the water there.

In the water at Newbridge in Askeaton the officers discovered a woman in a distressed state.

She was sitting in the drivers seat with water rising to waist level.

The current of the river was too strong, leaving her unable to open the car door to escape.

Gardaí entered the freezing water and freed the woman, who had no injuries.

Inspector Andrew Lacey praised Garda Hally and Garda Maher for their quick thinking.

He said the conditions "can't be underestimated" that night, as temperatures hit minus 6 degrees.

The driver thanked the two men and the emergency services and said "without their help, who knows what could have happened to [her]".

Gardaí are appealing to drivers to slow down and leave plenty of time for breaking during icy road conditions.
