The Department of Health has reported 1,427 new cases of covid-19 this evening.

The figure is a decrease of 74 on yesterday's figure.

There are currently 164 people in hospital with the virus - of which 26 are in intensive care units.

The Chief Medical Officer says Ireland has reached the milestone of 300,000 cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic.

Dr Tony Holohan is urging anyone who is eligible for a covid vaccine, to avail of one as soon as possible.

While the daily cases begin to look as if they may have plateaued, the vaccination programme gets another boost.

High numbers of people are turning up at walk-in Covid vaccination centres today.

The CEO of the HSE, Paul Reid, says 800 were vaccinated in the first hour and a half at a walk-in facility in City West in Dublin.

Anyone aged 16 years or over who hasn't yet received their first dose is eligible at over 20 centres until Monday.

People are being reminded to only go to Covid vaccination walk-in centres this weekend if it's for their first dose.

The Irish Medical Organisation says people who intend to get their second dose at a walk-in facility will face problems qualifying for a Digital Covid Cert.

Chairperson of the GP Committee of the Irish Medical Organisation, Dr Denis McCauley, says people due their second dose shouldn't go to a walk-in clinic:

"I think the walk-in centre is very appealing, and if they go hoping to finish their vaccination process by walking in [...] unfortunately that will mean that you really won't get a vaccine certificate even though you've had two vaccines."
