President Michael D Higgins has expressed his sympathies on the passing of Patricia Carrick.

The 51 year old, who's cancer was missed by Cervical Check, passed away overnight at her home in Galway.

In a tweet, Damien Carrick confirmed the news and thanked the public for their support.

The President, who is a long-time friend of Patricia's father Pat, praised her courage and grace as a campaigner.

He also said it's an appropriate time to think of those failed by the state.

Vicky Phelan Says The Carricks Are Still Flighting For Justice

The Carricks received an apology from Taoiseach Micheál Martin on behalf of the state earlier this month.

She watched the apology from her hospital bed, as she was too weak to attend the Dáil.

Speaking to Galway Bay FM, fellow advocate Vicky Phelan said she was glad to hear  Trish's passing was peaceful.

"A lot of women don't pass peacefully from cancer."

"I think it's very important to her that she got home," she noted.

Ms Phelan said that despite winning their case, Carricks and their solicitor Cian O'Carroll are still fighting for justice:

She said last week they were "literally trying to fight for Patricia's settlement to be paid out."
