2020 MTV Video Music Awards highlights

The virtual 2020 MTV Video Music Awards took place last night.

So many deserving artists were awarded for their incredible work.

In addition, there were plenty of outstanding speeches, performances and tributes made last night.

Here are some of the highlights from the ceremony:

1. Chadwick Boseman tribute

Last night's awards show was dedicated to Chadwick Boseman, who died after a four year battle with colon cancer last week.

Host of the show Keke Palmer paid tribute to him during the opening.

She described him as, "an actor whose talent and passion is a true inspiration to all the fans he touched and everyone he encountered."

Keke said, "We dedicate tonight's show to a man whose spirit touched so many."

"He is a true hero, not just onscreen, but in everything he did."

"His impact lives forever."

The words, 'The World Needs More Superheroes,' appeared on screen.

Then a clip from Chadwick's 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards acceptance speech for winning Best Hero played out.

As the video ended, the words, 'REST IN POWER,' appeared on screen.

2. Lady Gaga's Tricon Award

Another iconic moment from last night's ceremony was when Lady Gaga received the first ever Tricon Award.

She thanked her fans for all their support, "It means more to me than you probably even realise."

The award recognises artists who have become superstars in a number of areas: acting, singing, fashion etc.

3. Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga performance

The pair won Best Collaboration, Best Cinematography and Song of the Year, for their track Rain On Me at the VMAs.

They also put on an incredible performance of the track, which you have to check out here:

4. Keke Palmer's opener

Host Keke Palmer opened the show with a powerful speech.

She recognised the work of our front line heroes amid the global pandemic.

And she also commended this generation for stepping up amid the Black Lives Matter protests.

5. DaBaby's performance

DaBaby performed a medley of his tracks PEEPHOLE, Blind, and Rockstar.

The majority of the music video takes place inside a CGI world.

And he makes reference to the coronavirus pandemic and police brutality throughout the video.

6. Miley Cyrus' performance

Miley Cyrus performed her brand new song Midnight Sky and she was pitch perfect.

Near the end of the video, she ascends a staircase, and hops on top of a giant disco ball.

This was definitely a reference to her track Wrecking Ball.

7. BTS' performance

BTS busted out some well choreographed dance moves for a performance of their new song Dynamite.

Not to mention they all looked extremely slick in their suits.

8. Doja Cat's performance

Doja Cat went all out with the choreography for her performance of Say So and Like That.

She opened the video in character as a TV host, "Hi. This is Something Quirkier from MTV News."

"Performing live from planet her, is Doja Cat. Enjoy."

9. Julia Michaels and JP Sax's performance

These two reunited for a performance of their track If The World Was Ending.

And it honestly gave us goosebumps.

10. Black Eyed Peas closing

Just when we thought it couldn't possibly get any better, the Black Eyed Peas showed up.

The group closed the show with a medley of VIDA LOCA and I Gotta Feeling.
