Emma Stone got more than she bargained for when she stood up to accept her Oscar for her performance in Poor Things on Sunday night.

The 35-year-old actress ran up to the podium tightly gripping the back of her dress and revealed to the packed out Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles that the zip had burst open.

Laughing into the mic, she blamed fellow nominee Ryan Gosling's energetic performance of I'm Just Ken - from the Barbie movie - for the clothing mishap.

She adjusted herself and secured the gown before she launched into an emotional speech, thanking her husband Dave McCary and her young daughter Louise for their continued support.

Through choked tears, Emma said: 'I really just want to thank my family - my mum, my brother Spencer, my dad, my husband Dave. I love you so much. And most importantly, my daughter, who’s going to be three in three days, who has turned our lives technicolour.

'I love you bigger than the whole sky my girl, so thank you so much.'

After the prize giving, it was reported that the Cruella actress had to be sewn back into her outfit so that she could continue the celebrations and comfortably answer questions in the press room.

Produced by Ireland's own Element Pictures, Poor Things was up for a whopping 11 awards and managed to take home four - best actress, best costume design, best makeup and hair styling and best production design.
