The Academy responds to backlash

The Academy faced backlash after they failed to pay tribute to the late Luke Perry during the Oscars In Memoriam segment.

And he's not the only one they left out - they also failed to mention Disney star Cameron Boyce.

They've since responded to the backlash with a statement.

The statement was published by The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week.

'The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars In Memoriam segment.'

'An executive committee representing every branch considers the list and makes selections for the telecast based on limited available time.'

It goes on, 'All the submissions are included on Oscar.com and will remain on the site throughout the year.'

'Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce are remembered in the Oscar.com gallery.'

Meanwhile, stars including Kobe Bryant, Doris Day and Kirk Douglas were remembered on the night.

Luke Perry

The Riverdale star suffered a stroke at his home on Friday 1st March 2019.

Paramedics brought him to an LA hospital that morning where he remained under observation.

However, things took a turn for the worst that weekend and he died on Tuesday 4th March.

His family made a statement to ABC News last July.

They said, "It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron."

"He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated.''

Many praised him for his charity work after he raised more than $27,000 for the Thirst Project.

It's a charity that helps bring clean water to underdeveloped countries.

Disney Channel made a statement at the time saying he was, 'fueled by a strong desire to make a difference in peoples' lives through his humanitarian work.'
