Mel C has opened up about the terrifying moment she thought she’d blown her dream of becoming a Spice Girl after swearing at Victoria Beckham before the band had even released a single song.
Speaking on The Louis Theroux Podcast, the singer recalled a row during the 1996 BRIT Awards that left her convinced her time in the group was over before it had really begun.
The Spice Girls had been celebrating one of their first major industry events when things took a turn as they searched for their car at the end of the night.
“I just turned around and said to Victoria, ‘Oh f**k off,’” Mel admitted.
Although she thought it was nothing more than a throwaway comment, she woke up the next day fearing the worst. Those fears were confirmed when manager Simon Fuller called her into his office and warned that if anything like it ever happened again, she would be out of the band.
Mel admitted the warning “completely freaked” her out because she suddenly realised she could lose everything she’d worked towards.

The singer also reflected on the early days of the Spice Girls, revealing that not everyone in the music industry believed in what they were doing.
Despite the group’s confidence, Mel said many artists looked down on their music and didn’t take them seriously, with the band’s fun, pop sound failing to win over everyone at the time.

Three decades later, the Spice Girls remain one of the biggest girl groups of all time, and Mel recently teased that the band is closer to reuniting than it has been “in a very long time” – leaving fans hoping there could still be one more Spice Girls comeback.
