Australian designer Katie Perry has won a long-running trademark dispute with pop superstar Katy Perry, securing the right to continue selling clothing under her own name.
The legal battle centred on the designer’s “Katie Perry” clothing label, which she began using in the late 2000s. She argued that she had registered the trademark before the singer became widely known in Australia, accusing the chart-topping star of infringing on her brand.

In 2024, an Australian court initially sided with the singer and ruled that the clothing trademark should be cancelled. However, the case was later taken to the High Court of Australia, which has now overturned that decision in favour of the designer.
Judges ruled that Katy Perry’s global fame was already so strong in Australia that consumers were unlikely to confuse the singer with the local clothing label.
Despite the legal clash, representatives for the pop star said she had never intended to shut down the Australian designer’s business.
