An architect in the UK has put forward plans for a bridge that would link Ireland and Scotland by 2025.

The development follows Boris Johnson's suggestion to link England and France across the English Channel.

Professor Alan Dunlop said that a bridge between Scotland and Ireland would be "a wonderful thing".

Speaking to The National, Dunlop claimed the route would be financially beneficial to both countries with exceptional business potential.

What is being dubbed the 'Celtic bridge' could cost approximately €17 billion and would join Northern Ireland at Bangor or Larne to Portpatrick in Scotland.

The project is being likened to the Oresund Bridge which connects Denmark and Sweden.
