Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has been awarded an Honorary Oscar, recognizing his decades of dedication to filmmaking and his lasting impact on cinema. The honour was presented at the 2025 Governors Awards on 16 November at Los Angeles’ Ray Dolby Ballroom.
Cruise’s career spans over 45 years, featuring iconic roles in Risky Business, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, the Top Gun series, and the Mission: Impossible franchise. Despite four previous Oscar nominations, this marks the first Academy Award statuette of his career.
Academy President Janet Yang praised Cruise’s lifelong commitment to the craft, his advocacy for the theatrical experience, and his support for the stunt community. In his acceptance, Cruise reflected on his early love for movies, saying cinema “made the world so much larger” for him as a child, and reaffirmed his dedication to championing new filmmaking talent and the magic of the big screen.
