Ricky Gervais' Golden Globes prep

Ricky Gervais revealed on Late Night with Seth Meyers that he consulted with lawyers ahead of his 2020 Golden Globes speech.

He had to do this to make sure he wasn't violating any libel laws or, "breaking taste indecency."

And it turns out they were quite hesitant around the use of the word, "m***e," in his joke about Dame Judi Dench.

Ricky received a mixed reaction to his speech earlier this year.

He managed to insult his entire audience including acting legends like Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep.

It was his joke about Dame Judi Dench however, that caused a lot of controversy.

Ricky joked, "Dame Judi Dench said [Old Deuteronomy in Cats] was the role she was born to play."

"She likes nothing more than plonking herself down on the carpet, lifting her leg and licking her own m***e."

So you can understand why the comedian consulted with lawyers ahead of his speech.

Lawyers' concerns

The After Life star told Seth Meyers that his lawyers were concerned over the use of the word, "m***e."

Ricky explained, "I said, "It's a British term, it's a cute term, it's not offensive, it's not a swear word...""

However, they were still hesitant and suggested he use, "vagina," instead.

The actor said, "I went, "I'm not going to say vagina! That's worse, that's so clinical.""

After a lot of back and forth, he finally persuaded them that, "m***e was fine."

And even though they promised they wouldn't bleep the word, they did anyway.

Meanwhile, the comedian has signed an overall multi-year deal with Netflix to bring us a third season of After Life.
