New York audiences weren’t ready for Marty Supreme. Josh Safdie's secret weapon dropped like a bomb at the New York Film Festival this Monday — a surprise premiere that left jaws on the floor and sparked instant Oscar buzz.

The film stars Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a real-life table tennis prodigy who dominated the U.S. championships in the late '50s. But this isn’t your average sports flick. It's a chaotic, high-speed ride through obsession, glory, and total meltdown — all anchored by what critics are already calling Chalamet’s greatest performance yet.

“This isn’t just a ping pong movie,” said one critic. “It’s a full-blown fever dream.”

Chalamet himself showed up to the screening, joined by co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, and Odessa A’zion. With a massive grin, the actor pointed out he went to high school just down the street. “This is f***ing awesome,” he told the crowd.

Early reactions flooded social media, with audiences calling the film “exhilarating,” “manic,” and “nerve-shredding.” Several critics compared Chalamet’s turn to DiCaprio’s breakout in The Wolf of Wall Street, while others claimed he’s a lock for a Best Actor nomination.

Marty Supreme marks Safdie’s first solo feature since splitting from brother Benny — and it’s a bold one. Costing a whopping $70 million, it’s A24’s biggest gamble to date.

And the irony? Benny’s own film The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is also making waves this awards season. Looks like it’s brother vs. brother at the Oscars.

Marty Supreme lands in U.S. theaters December 25. The UK gets it on New Year’s Day.
