Greg O'Shea talks Amber Gill

Love Island's Greg O'Shea has finally shared his side of the story following his split from Amber Gill in 2019.

He vehemently denies reports he broke up with her over text, and claims it was her team of people who released that story to the media.

Greg told MailOnline that he never spoke out about their split because his management advised him against it.

'When it was all happening I was like, 'I have screenshots, I can release a statement with screenshots to show people the truth.''

'But it was only going to add fuel to the fire and so I took the brunt of it,' he revealed.

The 26-year-old admitted, 'It was hard to bite my tongue but that's just the way it played out.'

So how did their relationship come to an end?

Well, the Irish rugby star claims Amber approached him on the subject of becoming boyfriend and girlfriend after they left the villa.

Making it work

Greg however, knew it wasn't going to work and was very honest about that.

He pointed out how she would be working in the UK, while he pursued his dreams in Ireland.

'I said, 'can we see how it plays out for the next while?''

'But she didn't really like that and got upset that I didn't want to automatically be girlfriend and boyfriend – this was all on FaceTime.'

'She said, 'I don't really want to be with someone who isn't sure they want to be with me,' and we left it at that.'

'The next day she got onto me again and she calmed down and agreed with me,' Greg continued.

During that call, Greg told her he couldn't give her what she deserves.

'I think she expected me to fight for it but I had to be realistic and look at it as a proper relationship and not the Love Island winners.'

The conversation took place over FaceTime, and when they hung up the phone, he took off for training.

'I couldn't believe it'

An hour later, he returned to find his phone was blowing up with messages.

An article had been released alleging he broke up with her over text, 'I couldn't believe it.'

'I rang her and said, 'what's this story? Why would you do that? You know that's not the truth.''

Amber allegedly told him her people released the story, and that she, 'didn't want it to happen.'

Greg, his family and his friends were bombarded with death threats and hate mail.

He said his mother was getting phone calls and receiving nasty messages saying, 'you gave birth to a little p***k.'

'Her fans – it's like an Amber army and I can see why because she has everything going for her but when they turned on me it was very scary.'

'I could deal with it because I had the lads around me but it was very sad for my mother who got so upset. It got brutal for a while.'

Greg revealed, 'I lost 600,000 followers in a short space of time.'

'It was really hard at the time'

He continued, 'Everyone flipped on me thinking I was a bad person.'

'It's been brushed over and I'm fine now and in a better place but it was really hard at the time.'

It was this experience that made Greg realise he wasn't, 'cut out for this crazy lifestyle.'

'So I tucked myself away back in Ireland and I kept training with the team full time.'

Greg added that he has absolutely nothing against Amber, and insisted they actually really, '[understood] each other.'

He reached out to her after Caroline Flack's death to make sure she was okay.

The Irish man explained Amber was quite close with Caroline, who really took care of her on the show.

Greg and Amber got talking again and they, 'laughed about everything that happened.'

They both agreed they, 'wished [they] had dealt with it a bit better. We support each other.'

'She is the whole package, she has everything going for her,' Greg gushed.

At the time, Amber admitted she was really, 'disappointed,' that they couldn't make it work.

During a chat on Loose Women, she admitted, "From my point of view I still wanted to make it work."
