A plan which could see speed limits lowered will be presented to Cabinet in two weeks time.

It comes as the Gardaí, the Road Safety Authority and the general public raise concerns about the amount of deaths on Irish roads.

If the plans are approved the following limits could drop:

  • National secondary roads would see limits reduced from 100km per hour to 80.
  • Rural and local roads could drop from 80 to 60 km/hr.
  • 30km limit put in place for residential areas, towns and cities.

2023 has been described as ‘a devastating year for motorists by Gardaí.

There’s been 128 deaths on Irish roads this year. Last night a man in Carlow lost his life following another fatal.

Junior Transport minister Jack Chambers is currently drafting the new legislation.

Jack says while some may view the move as extreme he believes it is a "necessary" step to protect Irish motorists.

The plans will be presented to Cabinet on September 19th.
