“What about this photograph feels different to you?"
American chat show host Jimmy Kimmel says he was shocked by the difference in the presidential election here, compared to the US.
The late night star was in the country visiting his Irish relatives last week while the election was taking place.
During the opening monologue to his first show back on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC this week, he says he didn't realise it was happening until he and his family landed.
However, he says he was in awe watching it all unfold, and particularly at Heather Humphreys' congratulatory message to Catherine Connolly after her win.
He went on to share an image of the pair shaking hands and smiling after their final debate, and asked his audience: “What about this photograph feels different to you?"
“Two women, yes, that’s a big one, but also they’re sharing a warm embrace," he continued.
“Connolly won, and get this, her opponent said, ‘Catherine will be a president for all of us, and she will be my president and I really would like to wish her all the very, very best’.
He went on to joke: “No caps, no whining about the election being rigged. Makes you wonder, what’s wrong with these people?”
The comedian went on to heap praise on the country saying everyone he met was a 'delight' and that 'everything people say about Irish people is true'.
He added that he hadn't 'one bad experience with anyone' and told a story of a kind gesture he experienced.
“My niece left her purse at a pub and a woman she never met figured out where she was staying and drove it to our hotel, then refused to accept money for it.
“She really seemed confused about the idea that my niece would even offer her money for it," he joked.
The host says his whole family were on the trip, to visit their Irish roots.
They to went to see the house where his father’s great-grandparents were born in Co Mayo, after tracking down family on Ancestry.com.
